Friday marks 46 years since one of the best-selling singers of all time released her signature album.
On May 22, 1980, the great Diana Ross released her top-selling album, Diana. Ross was already a household name in the music industry as the former lead singer of The Supremes, but Diana would send her singles career into another stratosphere.
The album, released through Motown Records, was recorded at the Power Station in New York City. Diana followed the release of 20 Golden Greats (1979), an album featuring some of Ross’ greatest hits.
Diana was headlined by her No. 1 hit, “Upside Down.” The song tells the story of a cheating significant other that she cannot move on from, professing her passionate love for the partner despite unloyalty.
Nile Rodgers produced and co-wrote “Upside Down.” In a 2020 interview with the New York Post, Rodgers recalled how the song game together for Ross.
“Those were her words actually,” Rodgers said. “She said that she just wanted to turn her whole career upside down, and that was in our notes. But we thought that it would be more powerful in a romantic setting, so we wrote ‘Upside down, boy you turn me.’ And she flipped when she heard it.”
‘Diana’ Sold More Than 10 Million Copies Worldwide

Diana would sell over 10 million copies worldwide, making it Ross’ best-selling album by a wide margin. The album would be followed by To Love Again, released on Feb. 17, 1981. In Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest music albums of all time, Diana claimed the No. 394 spot.
The album also included “My Old Piano” and “I’m Coming Out,” another hit that reached No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The Queen of Motown usually opens her concerts with “I’m Coming Out.”
