A group of scientists has developed a brand-new 3D printing technology that makes it possible to produce objects with both hard and soft sections. This new technology has potential applications in the medical field.

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have made a breakthrough in 3D printing technology. Their work has enabled the seamless production of objects with both soft and hard properties within a single item. Let’s take a closer look at this innovative technology.

3D printing technologies have seen significant advancements in recent years. Scientists are now able to print everything from residential buildings to organs. This newly developed technology appears to take these capabilities a step further, as it will allow for the 3D printing of objects that are hard on the outside but soft on the inside, similar to bone. So, how was this achieved?

In their study, the scientists used a special liquid resin and light. By chemically interacting the liquid resin with violet light, the experts obtained a soft layer. When the same liquid resin interacted with ultraviolet light, a hard layer was formed. Performing this process during a single print resulted in an object that is partially soft and partially hard, with the different sections firmly bonded to each other.

Experts at the University of Texas at Austin were astonished by their work, as such a capability had not been possible with previously used resin printing materials. Furthermore, it was largely unexpected that the soft part of the printed object would move like rubber, while its hard part would be as strong as the plastic materials we encounter in daily life.

Zak Page and his team believe their developed technology has immense potential. According to the scientists, this new printing technology could lead to the development of wearable sensors, soft robots, and even surgical products. It remains to be seen whether this innovative printing technology will one day replace traditional prosthetic technologies.
