Markets turned their attention toward the April jobs report, which showed the US economy added 115,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg estimated median job growth of 65,000 and a 4.3% unemployment rate.
The jobs report was largely seen as overshadowed by geopolitical events, however. Crude prices moved higher in after-hours trading after military clashes erupted near the Strait of Hormuz. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) crude rose 0.4% after both the US and Iran accused one another of initiating attacks in the region.
