Federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell focused on the $2.5 billion renovation of the central bank’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., and his related testimony to Congress. Powell said the investigation is an attempt to intimidate him by “threatening a criminal indictment” as he lowers interest rates at a slower pace than President Donald Trump desires.
