Hollywood has taken a significant step forward, showcasing how artificial intelligence technology will be utilized in future filmmaking. TriStar Pictures has fully integrated AI with its latest film, “Here,” directed by Robert Zemeckis. In this movie, generative artificial intelligence techniques were used to depict Tom Hanks and Robin Wright at various ages across a span of 60 years.

Shaping the Future of Film Production

The movie “Here” is based on a graphic novel published in 2014, which primarily takes place in a single living room in New Jersey. Instead of casting different actors for characters of various ages, the filmmakers opted to use AI to age and rejuvenate Hanks and Wright. This transformation was achieved through a real-time face-swapping system developed by the visual effects company Metaphysic.

Unlike traditional aging methods, Metaphysic’s technology performs transformations in real-time by analyzing the actors’ faces during filming. The production team used two monitors: one displaying the actors’ actual age and another showing the rejuvenated images for the scene. According to Zemeckis, this technology wasn’t available three years ago and would have been prohibitively expensive to implement.

Metaphysic’s AI technology was also used in other upcoming projects, including “Furiosa: A Mad Max Story” and “Alien: Romulus”. The increasing use of artificial intelligence in Hollywood, however, has sparked controversy, particularly among actors and screenwriters concerned about its implications for the industry.
