Snap Inc. has unveiled its long-awaited augmented reality glasses, Specs, and the market’s verdict was swift.

The $2,195 wearable sent the company’s stock down more than five percent the day after its announcement – a bruising end to a year in which shares had already shed 30 percent of their value. It was not the debut Snap was hoping for.

Social media commentary was equally unforgiving, with users quick to lambast the glasses’ clunky design.

CEO Evan Spiegel took the stage at the Augmented World Expo in California to call Specs “the beginning of a new era in computing.”

Then he went on CNBC, wore the glasses on air, and defended the price by comparing them to a high-end laptop.

“The most important way to think of Specs is as a computer,” he said.

“They’re comparably priced to other high-end computers or high-end laptops.”

It is a fair comparison – if you are the kind of person who routinely spends that much on a computer.

What You Get for the Money

On paper, the hardware is genuinely impressive.

Specs are powered by two Snapdragon processors – one dedicated to computer vision, one to running AR Lenses – and deliver a 51-degree field of view, which Snap says is equivalent to a 115-inch cinema screen placed about ten feet away, or a 24-inch desktop monitor for closer work.

The display supports 16 million colours, with Snap claiming sharper contrast and smoother visuals than anything previously available in a glasses form factor.

The optics rely on a redesigned waveguide built from billions of nanostructures – so small, Snap says, that more than 10,000 can fit on the tip of a single hair.

Electrochromic lenses, borrowed from the same technology used in Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows, shift from clear to tinted in ten seconds.

Motion-to-photon latency sits at 7 milliseconds, verified by robotic measurement systems, which helps digital content feel anchored in the real world rather than floating loosely on top of it.

The frames are made from Swiss TR90 polymer, come in two sizes – 47mm at 132 grams and 52mm at 136 grams – and support removable prescription inserts. They are, by the standards of AR hardware, genuinely wearable.

Standalone and Capable

What separates Specs most clearly from its competitors is what it does not need.

Unlike Meta’s Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, it does not require a tethered smartphone. Unlike Apple’s Vision Pro, there is no wire running to a battery puck.

Specs is fully standalone, which Spiegel positioned as the product’s defining advantage – more capable than AI glasses, more wearable than headsets, and not dependent on anything else in your pocket or bag.

Use cases include a large private display for streaming, screen casting, and remote working; spatial AR tools for measurement and navigation; an AI assistant that responds to what you are looking at; and hundreds of developer-built Lenses covering everything from golf to interactive drum lessons to educational visualisations. For enterprise applications – field service, hands-free training, knowledge work on the move – there is a credible pitch here that goes beyond consumer novelty.

Battery life is four hours under mixed use, extended to 20 hours total with the included charging case. That is enough for a working day with careful management, though it remains the specification most likely to give potential buyers pause.

The Price Problem

Snap has been here before. The original Spectacles launched in 2016 to considerable hype, only for the company to write off $40 million in losses from excess inventory the following year.

Updated versions arrived in 2018 and 2019 with incremental improvements and limited commercial impact. A creator-focused AR version followed in 2021. Specs is a categorically different and more ambitious product than any of those – but Snap’s history with hardware does not inspire automatic confidence.

Spiegel is making a specific bet: that the gap between cheap AI glasses and expensive, bulky headsets is real, that consumers and enterprises will pay a premium to fill it, and that Snap – after more than a decade of investment across displays, optics, computer vision, and a proprietary operating system – is the company positioned to own that space.

More than 7,000 patents have been filed in service of that vision.

Whether that price point is right to bring the vision to market at scale is the question Snap has not yet answered. The stock market, for now, has its doubts.
