With the first-overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, the Chicago White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky.
Cholowsky hit .320 with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs as a junior with the Bruins, and White Sox director or amateur scouting Mike Shirley explained why the choice was easy.
“He was the shortstop, leader and captain for the No. 1 college team in America,” Shirley said.
“He is foundational on the field with his habits. He’s a leader on the field. He has very secure defense at shortstop, so he does the things defensively that you want a 6-hole guy to do. I think the power is real. He does those three pillars we talked about. He controls the zone. There’s contact and there’s damage, and he plays shortstop.”
After a couple seasons in a row as one of the worst teams in all of baseball, the White Sox entered the 2026 All-Star break tied for first in the American League Central. While Cholowsky won’t be helping them this season, he’s now an integral part of what fans on the South Side will hope is a bright future.
