On Tuesday, January 20, Osaka walked out to the Rod Laver Arena for her opening round match against Antonia Ruzic in an extravagant look. The Japanese tennis star ditched her kit as she donned some pleated pants paired with a hat, a veil and an umbrella. While the outfit drew praise from many, Eliza Wastcoat expressed her distaste for the look in a lengthy video shared on social media, saying,

“You are simply lying to yourself if you say you like Naomi Osaka’s walk on outfit. I am tired of my own argument that anything that gets people talking about tennis is a good thing. Because tacky and tasteless fashion choices do not do the heritage of tennis fashion any justice.”

Reacting to Wastcoat’s statement, one fan on X slammed the influencer as ‘bitter, twisted and jealous’, writing,

“How bitter, twisted and jealous is she?! Elite sport is literally about entertainment. Respect to Naomi Osaka for having the guts to do something different and entertain us!”

Up next, Osaka took on Romania’s Sorana Cirstea. The 28-year-old got the match off to a strong start, clinching a 6-3 win in the first set. However, a string of unforced errors and poor choices saw her lose the second set 4-6, before she was finally able to regain her composure in the decider for a 6-2 triumph.

Now, Naomi Osaka will take on Australian Maddison Inglis for her third-round encounter at the year’s first Major. This upcoming match makes the duo’s first time playing each other and Osaka will likely need to put in some work if she expects to make it to the other side unscathed.
