Moving Objects Simply by Imagining

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in the USA announced that they have developed a new brain-computer interface (BCI), enabling a paralyzed individual to control a robotic arm merely with their thoughts. The researchers explained that the device works with small sensors placed on the surface of the brain. Accordingly, the user can move the robotic arm by simply visualizing the hand movements they wish to make in their mind.

Previous similar devices required re-calibration by an engineer after a few days of use. However, UCSF researchers stated that the new system, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) support, automatically adapts to small daily changes in the brain and can operate continuously for up to seven months. The researchers noted that this allows the user to perform basic movements like grasping, carrying, and releasing objects independently for extended periods.

The research team announced that the developed technology will also be tested in home environments to facilitate its more effective use in daily life. The team emphasized that the system could be widely used in the daily lives of individuals with paralysis in the future.
