The search for the next James Bond continues, and there have been plenty of big names brought up as possible contenders for the role. Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickinson have each been mentioned, but longtime James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams explained to The Independent why they wouldn’t be right for 007.
Casting James Bond
McWilliams was the casting director of the James Bond franchise for over forty years, from 1981’s For Your Eyes Only up to 2021’s No Time to Die. She has since retired, but if anyone knows what it takes to cast Bond…it’s her.
So, what does she think of Elordi, Turner, or Dickinson as the iconic secret agent? “I don’t want to see any of them as James Bond,” she said.
“It is absolutely essential that he retains a total enigma,” she explained. “I don’t want to see any of them as Bond because we now know so much about them. We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are. We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives. We never want to see him at home. And a vital element of the whole thing is his job description. He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience.“
McWilliams continued, “Timothy and Pierce weren’t particularly well known. Daniel had had a career in independent films and a fairly colorful romantic life beforehand, but he wasn’t a household name, and that helps enormously. I want to see somebody who is completely out of the blue.“
I certainly don’t envy Amazon’s position. Many long-time fans are already skeptical about the new project, and the next James Bond, whoever that might be, will be under enormous pressure. This is the person who could headline the franchise for the next decade, and there’s a lot on the line if Amazon gets it wrong. I’ve always been a fan of seeing a relative unknown as Bond, so I hope the production is casting a large net.
The Next James Bond
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Nina Gold would be serving as casting director on the new Bond film. Her credits include Game of Thrones, The Crown, The Martian, as well as five films in the Star Wars franchise, so she’s used to casting major characters. She was also nominated for an Oscar for her work on Hamnet.
“The search for the next James Bond is underway,” Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement at the time. “While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.” Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Three) is set to direct the film from a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders).
