Sharon Baugh turned other retailers’ unwanted returns into affordable $5 finds and, along the way, built something much bigger than a store.
Baugh joins Yahoo Finance’s Josh Lipton to discuss the business model behind the Georgia bin store she started with her husband, why they chose the small town of Trenton, and how demand for affordable goods brought customers from all walks of life through their doors. After the fledgling business was forced to close early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Baugh says customers were waiting in lines outside when it reopened.
Baugh also explains how resale businesses can keep returned merchandise out of landfills, why serving the community became more important than simply making money, and the philosophy that guided the business: take care of your neighbors, and your neighbors take care of you. She also discusses why her family eventually sold the store and started a food truck to spend more time with their children.
