Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a businessman who has gained tremendous influence over the U.S. government and who also has substantial financial interests in a potential adversary to the United States: China. This could be an unprecedented conflict of interest within the U.S. government. We look at the extent of Musk’s business in China, his future expansion plans, and Beijing’s leverage. We visit the part of Shanghai housing Musk’s $2 billion Gigafactory, his $200 million Megapack factory, the Tesla worker neighborhood nicknamed the “Tesla Dormitory,” a Tesla store that spans one and a half football fields, one of Musk’s largest supercharging stations, and a track designated by the Chinese government for carmakers to test their self-driving technology which has yet to be approved for the American EV maker.
