The Optimism Superchain upgrade, delivered via 16a, is a targeted maintenance release building on Upgrade 16 from July 2025.
It was thoroughly tested on the Sepolia Superchain in late September, enduring over 10 days of validation before today’s mainnet deployment.
Pending governance approval, Superchain Upgrade 16a will be proposed for execution soon:

This update replaces Upgrade 16, incorporating ecosystem feedback for greater flexibility and security. The refined code is cleaner, eliminating unused elements that could pose risks. It also introduces developer-friendly toggles, such as turning on or off the ETHLockbox or supporting custom gas tokens for L2s.
Collectively, these enhancements lay the groundwork for the full Interop Layer rollout in early 2026, which will feature native message passing, ERC-7802-compliant asset bridging, and shared fault proofs.
While the upgrade activates today, adoption won’t be uniform across OP Stack chains. Base, for instance, plans to implement it on October 8.
