Key Takeaways:

The “Silviculture Society” was launched by the Ethereum Foundation in an effort to safeguard its principles of open source, privacy, security, and anti-censorship.Vitalik Buterin, an Ethereum co-founder, has expressed concern about the crypto industry becoming increasingly obsessed with gambling. The EF demonstrates its support for core values by pledging $1.25M for Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev’s legal defense.

Starting today, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) is deepening its commitment to core blockchain values by announcing the launch of an external advisory group — the “Silviculture Society” — that will ensure Ethereum stays in alignment with its principles. The move comes as debates put the future of the broader crypto field and its leaders at the forefront.

This effort demonstrates the EF’s commitment to preserving Ethereum’s original principles while adapting to a dynamic environment.

What is the Silviculture Society?

On the 28th of February, the EF formally introduced the “Silviculture Society”. This is a group of 15 people from outside the Foundation who will offer informal guidance and be custodians of the Ethereum ecosystem’s health and integrity. Their goal is to support and advocate the same foundational principles that have powered Ethereum since day one: open source, privacy, security, and censorship resistance.

EF believes that the long-term success of Ethereum resides in a community of developers who are focused on building applications and infrastructure that align with these values. In pursuit of that goal, the Silviculture Society is made up of a variety of people with distinct talents and opinions.

Sample members and their backgrounds:

Matthew Green: A professor of cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, providing the Society with scholarly discipline and security know-how.Lefteris Karapetsas: The co-founder of Rotki, a privacy protecting software that is born out of the Society’s commitment to respect user privacy and maintain data sovereignty.Pseudonymous Members: Handles such as “Aleph,” “dystopiabreaker” and “mashbean” are representative of the Society’s embrace of cypherpunk culture and dedication to privacy and decentralization.

These include the individuals, among others, who will endeavor to keep Ethereum honest to its values. This diverse knowledge guarantees a comprehensive method for protecting the ecosystem.

One participant from the Silviculture Society noted that it serves as “arm’s length feedback from the PoV of ecosystem participants” and is not a governance council. This distinction is crucial as it highlights the group’s role as advisors rather than decision-makers.

Why Now? Context And Concerns In The Crypto Space

The creation of the Silviculture Society comes at a moment of a broader conversation about the changing ethos of the cryptocurrency industry. In recent times, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has spoken out against what he perceives to be an increasing acceptance, and even “encouragement,” of “blockchain-based casinos” in the space.

Buterin admitted it was disappointing to receive so much criticism for the Ethereum project not facilitating gambling platforms during an online discussion on February 20th. Some thought Ethereum “bad and intolerant” for that position, he said, and other blockchains were promoted for a more permissive stance. Buterin stated that if these values were reversed, he would lose interest in the crypto space. This indicates that the Silviculture Society is a way to ensure that Ethereum will never be tempted to trade its ideals for short-term good looks or fame.

Buterin’s outspoken position has caused a lot of debate in the community. He added that interacting with members of the community in real life had a different tone and helped to reassure him that the values of the space were still in place. However, the growing presence of casino-style applications on other blockchains continues to be a great thorn and demand for the EF to actively reaffirm its values.

Open Source Advocacy: Stand With Tornado Cash Developer

The Ethereum Foundation is serious about open source and not just in words. It recently put its money where its mouth was to the tune of $1.25 million towards the legal defense of Alexey Pertsev, a developer who worked on Tornado Cash.

Tornado Cash is an ETH mixer that helps users obscure transactions on the Ethereum blockchain. It has legitimate uses, but has also been linked to money laundering. As a result, Pertsev was arrested and charged in connection with his work on the project.

EF said in a statement dated Feb. 26 that “privacy is normal” and that “writing code is not a crime.” That bold position reflects the Foundation’s belief that developers should not be punished for building tools that can serve both beneficial and malicious ends. FYI: The EF remains steadfast in its support for open-source development, despite concerns over potential misuse.

In response, Pertsev expressed his gratitude for the organization’s “generous donation.” He said he’s working on his appeal and that the donation “means the world” to him.

Navigating Leadership Changes

The launching of the Silviculture Society also comes amidst internal shifts at the Ethereum Foundation. Aya Miyaguchi just took on the role of the new President of the Foundation after 7 years spent as Executive Director.

As the EF builds new organs and advisory groups to address other challenges, the Silviculture Society is focused on protecting the things the core ethos of Ethereum. It is a positive step and demonstrates the Foundation’s resolve to help remedy issues in the community in a methodical manner. The idea is to keep at the helm of the organization as it navigates the complexity and delicacies of the Ethereum ecosystem.

Community Concerns and Price Volatility

The EF’s leadership has faced past criticism. Although some of that has been constructive criticism, another member of the Silviculture Society reposted that the blame may lie with “price down pointless rage.”

At the same time, Ethereum’s price has been struggling. It could fuel resentment towards the EF.

As one member stated that the Silviculture Society “is not a governance council.” This distinction clarifies the role of the new group and helps manage expectations. It is not intended to literally set the price of Ethereum, nor answer all community concerns, but rather provide feedback and guidance around values.

The introduction of the Silviculture Society shows that the Ethereum Foundation is taking the steps to protect the Ethereum ecosystem. To me, this external advisory group is a reflection of a commitment to the founding principles of Ethereum and importance of a solid ethical framework.
