Tuesday marks the 42nd anniversary of a music icon scoring his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 in the United States.

The fourth of August features several pivotal dates in music history. Among them, Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool” was the first song to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which debuted on Aug. 4, 1958.

Additionally, today marks the 59th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s release of its first studio album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

It was also on this day, 42 years ago, when Prince’s classic album, Purple Rain, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Not only was this his first album to reach No. 1 in America, but it also dethroned another legendary album from the top spot.

Bruce Springsteen’s career-changing album, “Born in the U.S.A.”, had ruled the Billboard 200 for four consecutive weeks. Tuesday marks the 42nd anniversary of a music icon scoring his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 in the United States.

This album was written for the 1984 musical drama film, Purple Rain, starring Prince, Morris Day and Apollonia Kotero. The album included several of Prince’s greatest hits, including “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” “Purple Rain” and “Take Me with U.”

Purple Rainspent 24 weeks atop the Billboard 200. Fittingly, it was “Born in the U.S.A.” that ended Purple Rain’s run at the top, reclaiming No. 1 for the week of Jan. 19, 1985.

After Purple Rain, the “Love Symbol” celebrated four more albums that topped the Billboard 200. Around the World in a Day (1985), Batman (1989), 3121 (2006) and The Very Best of Prince also reached No. 1 in the United States.

The Very Best of Prince, released in 2001, topped the Billboard shortly after his untimely death at the age of 57 on April 21, 2016.
