Wisconsin cities from Madison to Milwaukee and up to Wisconsin Dells could see extreme temperatures this week as a heat wave hits the Midwest and Eastern United States.

According to the National Weather Service, for southeastern Wisconsin, “Heat impacts are expected through the work week, with heat index values in the 95 to 110 degree range each day Mon. through Fri.” The extreme heat is expected to continue through the July 4 weekend, according to NWS, and most of the state is under an extreme heat warning with “dangerously hot conditions with daytime heat index values up to 107 each day and overnight heat index values only in the upper 70s expected.”

WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee warned that the heat wave could be “deadly.”

It will turn very hot and humid on Monday away from the Lake Michigan shore. Highs in the afternoon will reach the upper 80s to mid 90s, with heat indices 95-105 degrees in many areas. #wiwx pic.twitter.com/BV9kTitMvk

“The heat is a silent killer,” Storm Team 4 meteorologist Brendan Johnson said to WTMJ. “It’s one of the top weather-related killers in our country, and it certainly tops the list here in the Badger State.” The Milwaukee Health Department has published a list of cooling sites.

The Wisconsin Weather Forecast Warns of Possible ‘Prolonged Heat’ That Could Reach a Heat Index of 110 Degrees in Multiple Cities

The National Weather Service is forecasting “prolonged heat next week” for multiple major cities in Wisconsin, according to its website. Wisconsin Dells, Fond du Lac, Beaver Dam, West Bend, Madison, Janesville, Milwaukee, and Kenosha were among the cities that could see temperatures soaring past 100 degrees. Monday June 29 and Tuesday June 30 were predicted to be the hottest.

The extreme heat is expected to last through the July 4 weekend. The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center released a map on June 28 that showed hazardous heat predictions covering Wisconsin for July 1 through July 5 as well.

“Very little reprieve from the heat, even near Lake Michigan!” wrote NWS, adding that Wednesday and Thursday could be less hot because more clouds and some showers and storms could arrive “at times,” but temperatures those days could be in the high 90s.

The National Weather Service Warned of a ‘Significant, Dangerous’ Heat Wave

The eastern United States and Midwest should brace for a “significant, dangerous, and record breaking heat wave” that is “expected next week for the Central to Eastern U.S…” NWS wrote with its national forecast.

“The latest guidance continues to strongly agree on a potentially historic heatwave across the eastern third of the country for the end of the week, and all of the guidance has a closed 594dm contour that persists for a few days. Some of the guidance hints at the possibility of all-time record highs, peaking during the Thursday to Friday time period,” the national forecast reads.

“The period begins Wednesday with a strong ridge anchored over the eastern half of the country, supporting a sprawling and dangerous heat wave,” the forecast predicted.

“Meanwhile an amplified trough will be over the West becoming reinforced as multiple impulses move through within the flow, with some energy possibly acting to suppress the Eastern ridge slightly by next weekend. Showers and thunderstorms will be most likely across the Gulf Coast/Florida region, the southern Rockies, and the Upper Midwest to Great Lakes/Northeast.”
