Ethereum continues to evolve as a blockchain platform with the introduction of the Pectra upgrade, a landmark improvement targeting scalability, user experience, validator performance, and developer efficiency. Implemented on May 7, 2025, Pectra combines multiple Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that impact both the execution and consensus layers of the network. This upgrade builds on the success of previous upgrades like Dencun and The Merge, but Pectra takes things even further.

In this article, we break down everything you need to know about Pectra: what it is, how it fits into Ethereum’s roadmap, what it offers, and why it matters for the future of Ethereum.

What is the Pectra Upgrade in Ethereum?

The Pectra upgrade is Ethereum’s latest network upgrade that merges two previously separate initiatives—Prague (execution layer) and Electra (consensus layer) into a single, synchronized upgrade. It is designed to improve scalability, transaction efficiency, validator flexibility, and wallet functionality.

What is the latest upgrade for Ethereum? As of June 2025, Pectra is the latest upgrade for Ethereum, representing a major milestone in the network’s multi-year journey toward becoming faster, cheaper, and easier to use.

Background and Roadmap Placement

Since its launch in 2015, Ethereum has followed a carefully structured roadmap. Each milestone has addressed specific limitations while paving the way for a more decentralized and efficient blockchain ecosystem.

One of the most pivotal moments in Ethereum’s history came in 2022 with The Merge, which marked the network’s transition from a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism to the more energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS).

In 2024, the Dencun upgrade introduced EIP-4844, also known as proto-danksharding, which brought in support for blob transactions. This dramatically lowered gas fees on Layer-2 networks, leading to a surge in adoption and usage of rollups.

Building on these advancements, Ethereum launched the Pectra upgrade in May 2025, which focuses on refining the execution layer, enhancing validator staking flexibility, and introducing smart wallet capabilities through features like account abstraction. What will Ethereum upgrade do through Pectra? It aims to boost network usability, efficiency, and scalability all in one coordinated update.

Before its mainnet deployment, Pectra underwent rigorous testing on three major testnets Holesky, Sepolia, and Hoodi, ensuring network readiness and stability.

The Ethereum Pectra upgrade introduces a wide range of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at improving the network’s usability, efficiency, and scalability. Below is a simplified breakdown of the most important changes:

Smarter Wallets: From EOAs to Smart Accounts

EIP-7702 upgrades externally owned accounts (EOAs), allowing them to temporarily act like smart contracts. This feature brings Ethereum closer to account abstraction, enabling flexible features like multi-action transactions, session keys, and sponsored gas fees—all of which improve user experience.

Better Staking and Validator Experience

Several EIPs in Pectra simplify staking operations and give validators more flexibility:

EIP-6110: Automates validator deposit handling directly on-chain, reducing delays and improving syncing speed.EIP-7002: Allows validators to withdraw their staked ETH using smart contracts, offering smoother and more flexible exit processes.EIP-7251: Raises the maximum ETH a validator can hold from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, reducing the need to run multiple validator nodes and allowing rewards to compound more easily.EIP-7549: Refactors how attestation data is organized, reducing network congestion and improving consensus efficiency.

Enhanced Blob Support for Layer-2 Scaling

To reduce fees and improve throughput for Layer-2 rollups, Pectra enhances Ethereum’s support for blob transactions:

EIP-7623: Increases the cost of calldata, encouraging more efficient blob usage and promoting better scaling practices.EIP-7691: Expands blob capacity per block, allowing more data to be included and reducing costs for Layer-2 networks like Arbitrum and Optimism.EIP-7840: Adds scheduling flexibility for blobs in Ethereum’s configuration files, helping future upgrades adjust blob size without hard forks.

Cryptographic Enhancements and Infrastructure Upgrades

Pectra also strengthens Ethereum’s cryptographic base and improves the coordination between different layers of the protocol:

EIP-2537: Introduces BLS signature support, improving cryptographic security and enabling better performance for staking, zero-knowledge proofs, and cross-chain bridges.EIP-2935: Restores access to historical block hashes, which are essential for smart contracts, oracles, and Layer-2 networks that need to verify past states.EIP-7685: Allows the execution layer (EL) to trigger requests from the consensus layer (CL), improving communication between the two and creating a more reliable infrastructure.

Each of these technical upgrades in Pectra brings Ethereum closer to its goals of being scalable, secure, and easy to use—whether you’re a casual user, a staker, or a developer building the next big dApp.

Benefits of the Pectra Upgrade

The Ethereum Pectra upgrade represents a major leap forward in making the Ethereum network faster, cheaper, more secure, and easier to use for everyone. Below is a deeper look at the core benefits Pectra brings to the table.

1. Cheaper Transactions for Everyone

One of the most immediate benefits of the Pectra upgrade is the reduction in transaction costs. So, how much are the gas fees in ETH Pectra? Since the upgrade went live, median transaction fees have dropped to approximately 0.000061 ETH (around $0.15) per transfer, making Ethereum more affordable for regular users.

This reduction is largely thanks to improvements in blob data capacity (EIP-7691) and call data cost adjustments (EIP-7623), which encourage the use of efficient Layer-2 solutions. In fact, blob transaction fees are now at their lowest recorded levels, boosting the adoption of rollups like Optimism, Arbitrum, and Base.

Noam Hurwitz, head of engineering at Alchemy, noted that Ethereum blob fees have dropped to their lowest possible level since the Pectra upgrade, reinforcing just how impactful these changes have been on network cost-efficiency.

Since Pectra we’ve also seen the longest sustained period of blob fees staying at 1 wei in the past 30d.

— Noam Hurwitz (@ProbablyNoam) May 7, 2025

What will Ethereum upgrade do? In this case, it directly cuts transaction fees, improving affordability and accessibility for millions of users and developers.

2. Improved Scalability Across the Network

With Ethereum adoption growing, the need for scalable infrastructure has never been greater. What is the Pectra upgrade in Ethereum solving here? technical upgrades that make the network more capable of handling high-volume usage:

Blob throughput has increased, allowing for larger data packets to be processed per block.Extended block history (via EIP-2935) enables better on-chain analytics, smarter dApps, and more complex decentralized systems.EIP-2537 adds BLS cryptography, which enhances Layer-2 interoperability and zero-knowledge proof operations.

These upgrades make Ethereum more scalable by design—capable of growing without compromising speed or security.

3. A More Intuitive and Powerful User Experience

The user experience (UX) is a core focus of Pectra. The inclusion of EIP-7702 allows externally owned accounts (EOAs) to behave like smart contracts temporarily. This unlocks new possibilities:

Gas fee sponsorship: Third parties can cover gas fees for users.Multi-step transactions: Users can execute several actions in one go.Session keys: Temporary keys allow safe, recurring transactions without compromising security.

Combined with improved staking flexibility (EIP-7002 and EIP-7251), these features remove barriers to using Ethereum, making wallets smarter and staking more manageable.

4. Empowerment for Developers

Pectra also makes Ethereum more developer-friendly by simplifying core processes:

EIP-6110 automates validator deposits, cutting down setup complexity for staking apps.EIP-7685 enhances communication between Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers, allowing for more robust smart contract logic and cross-layer coordination.Extended block history and improved infrastructure help dApp developers build more advanced features without relying heavily on external tools or data providers.

These improvements reduce time-to-deploy, streamline debugging and testing, and foster innovation in wallet design, DeFi, NFTs, and beyond.

5. Future-Proofing the Ethereum Network

Pectra doesn’t just fix current issues—it lays the groundwork for Ethereum’s long-term scalability and sustainability. Upcoming features like:

Verkle Trees: Will drastically reduce node storage needs, allowing for faster syncing and lighter clients.PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling): Will enable Ethereum to scale data availability efficiently without burdening full nodes.

These future upgrades will push Ethereum toward stateless clients, where users and dApps can interact with the network without downloading the full blockchain. Thanks to Pectra’s forward-compatible changes—such as configurable blob scheduling (EIP-7840)—Ethereum is already gearing up for this next era.

What’s Next? The Fusaka Upgrade and Verkle Trees

With Pectra now live, Ethereum’s development shifts to its next major milestone: the Fusaka upgrade, expected in late 2025. This upgrade will significantly boost data capacity by expanding blob support from 6 to 48 blobs per block, cutting Layer 2 transaction fees to under $0.01. A key innovation, PeerDAS will allow nodes to verify data with minimal downloads, improving network efficiency and accessibility.

Originally slated for Fusaka, the EVM Object Format (EOF) has been delayed due to technical complexity and will now feature in a future upgrade.

Meanwhile, Ethereum is preparing for the integration of Verkle Trees, a foundational shift that enables “stateless clients” by drastically reducing storage requirements and enabling faster syncing. Together, these improvements will make Ethereum more scalable, decentralized, and accessible for users, validators, and developers alike.

Conclusion

The Ethereum Pectra upgrade, live since May 7, 2025, represents a major leap forward in Ethereum’s long-term roadmap. By merging Prague and Electra upgrades into one seamless release, Pectra addresses longstanding challenges around gas fees, validator management, wallet usability, and execution layer efficiency.

However, could Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade power an Ether comeback? Many in the community believe so. By reducing transaction costs, enhancing user and developer experience, and paving the way for future scaling, Pectra strengthens Ethereum’s foundation at a time when competing blockchains are aggressively innovating.

And while no upgrade alone can guarantee price movements, the comprehensive changes seen here suggest that Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade could power an Ether comeback especially if paired with successful rollout of Fusaka and Verkle Trees.
