Over four vibrant days, the Republican National Convention became a platform for more than just political endorsements and party unity; it transformed into a verbose showcase, tallying over 110,000 words from its speakers. These words, carefully chosen and delivered with emphasis, not only echoed the charged atmosphere of the convention but also sketched the evolving contours of the Republican Party’s platform as it headed into the 2024 elections.

At the heart of the convention, the discourse was significantly shaped by economic concerns. Amid passionate speeches and fervent declarations, the rising prices of essential commodities like gas and groceries took center stage. Senator Rick Scott from Florida vividly painted a scenario of economic doom under a potential second term for President Biden, with gas prices surging to a staggering $10 a gallon. This fear-mongering was not unsubstantiated but bolstered by a frequent reiteration of terms related to the economy. Words like “skyrocketing,” “shocking,” and “crisis” punctuated the speeches, aiming to anchor the Republican economic narrative firmly in the minds of the electorate.

The issue of immigration also carved out significant airtime during the convention. The southern border was depicted as a porous entry point for “millions of illegal aliens,” with speakers not shying away from invoking images of “murderers and rapists” and “criminals and terrorists” infiltrating the country. The language used was stark and unyielding, designed to stoke fears and reinforce the party’s stance on rigorous border control and stringent immigration policies.

A look at the words chosen by notable speakers further illuminates the thematic priorities of the convention. Figures like Ted Cruz, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Donald Trump Jr., J.D. Vance, and Donald J. Trump himself leaned heavily on terms directly tied to the aforementioned key issues. Interestingly, while the economy dominated a significant portion of the discourse, with words such as “jobs,” “business,” “taxes,” and “inflation” making regular appearances, the personal brand of Donald J. Trump also commanded considerable mention, underscoring his enduring influence over the party’s direction and narrative.

One cannot overlook the conspicuous absence of certain terms, however. Despite the charged policy debates gripping the nation, words like “abortion” were notably rare in the convention’s rhetoric. This omission speaks volumes, hinting at the strategic sidestepping of divisive topics that might alienate moderate voters. Instead, the discourse subtly acknowledged the issue through phrases like “born and unborn,” maintaining a delicate balance between appeasing the party’s hardline base and not offending the broader electorate. Similarly, while “health care” did crop up a few times, there was a distinct lack of emphasis on contentious issues like the Affordable Care Act, again suggesting a calculated approach to navigating politically sensitive waters.

As the Republican Convention wrapped up, it left a clear marker of the party’s strategic pivot points and rhetorical strategies for the upcoming electoral battle. In stark contrast, the upcoming Democratic National Convention, scheduled from August 19-22 in Chicago, presents an opportunity for the Democratic Party to outline its counter-narrative. With speculation rife about whether President Biden will seek reelection or pass the torch, the Democratic Convention is poised to be a crucial moment of reflection and projection for the party.

In concluding, the Republican National Convention of 2024 was not just a mere assembly of party members and supporters; it was a carefully orchestrated event aimed at communicating a redefined party platform and solidifying a collective stance on pressing national issues. Through a strategic selection of themes and words, the convention sought to resonate with the broader American populace, all while laying the groundwork for the electoral battles ahead. As the political landscape continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: the power of words in shaping public opinion and electoral outcomes cannot be underestimated.
