Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for The Uprising, its new drama on the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Andrew Garfield.
In the film, out September 11, Garfield plays Wat Tyler, the legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war burns across England, Wat forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival.
The trailer opens with Garfield’s Wat setting the stage for the story via dialogue.
“I am no soldier. I am no priest. I’m just a farmer,” he says. “The land is broken. We are forced to work beyond what our souls can take.”
We then hear those on the side of the King commanding peasants to pay taxes they can’t pay and work to no end.
With a fury inside him, Garfield unleashes violence against them and commences the rebellion.
“It is time to set the world on fire,” he says, as his army converges on London. “There will be no peace until we are free.”
Greengrass directed The Uprising from his own script, also producing alongside Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter and Lars Sylvest. A likely awards contender, the film also stars Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston and Sky Yang.
