Selena Gomez is standing up for herself — as she should!
The Wolves singer became the subject of some pretty nasty commentary regarding her acting chops over the weekend — but not from critics or trolls. This time from a fellow actor! If you have no clue what we’re talking about, Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez appeared on Gaby Meza’s Hablando de Cine podcast recently and absolutely SLAMMED the Only Murders in the Building star’s performance in her new film Emilia Pérez… Or at least one aspect of it! If you haven’t seen it yet, Selena both speaks AND sings in Spanish — and Eugenio ain’t sold one bit on her accent. He said in Spanish on the podcast:
“Selena is indefensible. I was there [watching the movie] with people, and every time a scene came [with her in it], we looked at each other to say, ‘Wow, what is this?’”
Damn! So harsh!

Gaby then chimed in, telling Eugenio:
“Spanish is neither her primary nor secondary language nor fifth. And that’s why I feel she doesn’t know what she is saying, and if she doesn’t know what she’s saying, she can’t give her acting any nuance … And that is why her performance is not only unconvincing but uncomfortable.”
Ouch. She went on to note that despite their criticisms, Selena’s fans will likely defend her. Eugenio agreed, adding:
“I’m glad you’re saying that because I was saying, ‘I can’t believe no one is talking about it?’”

Well, Selena ended up hearing all the trash talk and decided to hop in the comments to defend herself. She wrote:
“I understand where you are coming from..I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.”
She also took aim at Gaby for calling out her fans in a separate comment:
“Also do not ever say my fans are the problem standing up, as you say, for me”
Aww! Poor Selena! She shouldn’t be having to deal with this sort of chatter from her fellow actors who are supposed to be lifting her up… That’s what the critics and haters are for! Not to mention Eugenio downright raved about the movie just back in October! We’re not kidding! See (below):
But guess what?? He came to his senses!
On Saturday, the Under the Same Moon star took to TikTok once again to issue Selena an official apology. He wrote in English:
“Dear Selena, I truly apologize for my careless comments — they are indefensible and go against everything I stand for. As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.
Emilia Pérez deserves to be celebrated, not diminished by my thoughtless remarks. I’m walking away from this with an important lesson learned. While I understand if you cannot accept my apology, please know it comes from the heart. With all my love and admiration, Eugenio Derbez”

Good for him for realizing how crass his comments were! Selena has yet to respond, but it’ll be inneresting to see if she accepts his apology. Thoughts, Perezcious readers??
