It should come as no surprise that ABC is ready to renew two of its hottest series, Scrubs and Shifting Gears, for the 2026-27 season. The renewals mark a second season for the beloved Scrubs revival, and a third season for the sitcom led by Tim Allen and Kat Dennings. Meanwhile, the fate of the Scott Speedman-led crime drama, R.J. Decker, hangs in the balance.

While ABC is keen to renew Scrubs and Shifting Gears, the network did not specify how many episodes either comedy series would receive, though word has it the amount, like last time, will be limited. Scrubs aired 9 episodes in Season 1, Shifting Gears aired 10 episodes in Season 1 and 13 in Season 2.

Audiences love Scrubs

As I said, it’s no surprise that Scrubs will get another season. The revival featuring the Sacred Heart crew was the highest-rated comedy telecast of any network this season among 18-49 year olds. It racked up 11 million viewers in its first 35 days, proving that fans missed the medical comedy something fierce. Elsewhere, Shifting Gears became ABC’s most-watched comedy on linear, with droves of people tuning in for the sophomore season’s fall premiere.

Should R.J. Decker get another season?

On the other hand, R.J. Decker, the crime procedural starring Scott Speedman and Jaina Lee Ortiz, is “on the bubble,” meaning it’s got a 50/50 shot of returning. In the series, an ex-con photographer named R.J. Decker becomes a PI in South Florida, solving strange cases with help from his journalist ex, her cop wife, and an enigmatic woman from his past who may help or destroy him. Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens, Mélodie Rose Romano, Bevin Bru, and David Zayas help lead the cast.

Our thoughts on the Scrubs revival

Our live-action TV reviewer, Alex Maidy, loved the Scrubs revival. In his review, Alex said, “Scrubs, despite an underwhelming final season, returns just as strong as the original series in its prime. The emotional elements and the comedy work hand in hand, allowing the characters to have evolved in some ways but remaining their rambunctious and silly selves we first met back in 2001. If this revival doesn’t click with audiences, Scrubs will at least have redeemed itself with a much more fitting final chapter. I have no doubt that long-time fans and new viewers alike will discover the new Scrubs and love every minute of it. I found myself smiling and laughing out loud in equal measure. Some other recent revivals have felt wooden, and the jokes missed more often than they hit, but Scrubs is a perfect example of revisiting a classic series and doing it right. I love that this show is back and hope that it sticks around for another decade.”
