In Shenzhen, China, 7-Eleven stores are now receiving their drinks and snacks via the metro using wheeled, “penguin-like” robots. The system, which became operational on Monday, stands out as the world’s first metro-based retail delivery initiative.

Four-Wheeled Innovation

Forty-one autonomous robots, developed by VX Logistics, are making deliveries to over 100 7-Eleven branches throughout the Shenzhen Metro network. The robots, with their waist-high stature, LED eyes, and smiling faces, present both a functional and charming appearance. They are equipped with special chassis systems to navigate elevators, platform gaps, and train crossings on their own.

Aligned with City Policy

This initiative is a significant step taken within Shenzhen’s “Embodied Intelligent Robot Action Plan,” which aims to integrate robots into urban life by 2027. AI strategies developed across China in response to the aging population also support such technologies.

Revolution in Delivery

According to Li Yanyan, manager of 7-Eleven, this system is far more practical than previous manual transportation methods. “Previously, delivery personnel manually carried goods to metro stations. Now, robots do this quietly and efficiently,” she says.

Era of Public Robots

Shenzhen Metro officials state that the robots’ performance could pave the way for similar systems to be used for medical supplies, cleaning equipment, and other sensitive deliveries in the future. The project also highlights China’s goal of not limiting robots to factories but bringing them into public spaces.

Embodied Intelligence Spreading

Hou Shangjie, Head of VX Logistics Automation, states that the robots will become more efficient through continuous learning in real-world conditions. Experts predict that such applications will soon become as commonplace as seeing a kiosk in the metro.
