The Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, who just cannot stay out of the limelight, visited Oyen this very week, championing his cause. The picture showed him beaming along with a handful of supporters, almost like a politician on the move. If anybody thought this was some sort of routine campaign visit, I’d ask them to reconsider; the comment-section exploded with outrage and outright mockery.

The captioning accompanying the photo read: “The people of Oyen are fed up with paying more to get less thanks to runaway inflationary spending and high taxes from the Liberal government.” Poilievre went farther in promising “common sense policies” that would lead to “lower prices, bigger paycheques.” All in all, the common political rhetoric of Canada, right? However, the empty rhetoric was something many weren’t willing to accept.
One user responded. “They said all that? Did they say it in cringey slogans?” Ouch. Another replied, “You’re fake news buddy! Canada already part of the states in case you missed it lol.” Thick was the sarcasm, and thicker was the skepticism.
Then the critics, almost simultaneously, asked about his record: “What have you done for the people in your new riding or the riding that you held for over 20 years?” Meanwhile, one of the detractors said, “You don’t have an ounce of common sense because if you did, you wouldn’t be in the situation you are in.”
Some questioned prior promises. “You said axing the carbon tax would result in lower grocery prices,” a commenter reminded him. “Removing the tax did not result in lower prices but it was a good campaign strategy.”
But the bottomless pit did hold space for some goodwill. “Loving it to see Damien Kurek by his side smiling. A very generous GENTLEMAN he is,” cried out a supporter. At least the spirit was there, with a hint of doubt hanging over the remaining replies.
Then comes the real side-splitter: Several people brought up his security clearance–or lack thereof. “How’s that security clearance coming along?” one user taunted. Someone else said, “Knock knock….. Hi, it’s me PP. As you know, I lost the election and my district.”
Poilievre’s post was aimed at rallying the base, but instead got a mixed bag of loyalty, skepticism, and trolling. Whether this door-knocking will ever amount to anything politically remains to be seen. Whether or not that will become political capital remains a big question. What is profuse, however, is the side-eye that accompanies him already.
Another person piped up, “I want more powerful paycheques like he promised last year, not bigger. Those are a bitch trying to jam into the ATMs.” Priorities, indeed.

And at the end of the day, in the words of Poilievre, is something about lower taxes and bigger paycheques. It was a different agenda, however, on the rest of the Internet: calling him out one sarcastic comment after the other. Whether he can make this a win before next election is the real question. However, for now, the comment section sure is having one hell of a time.
