The Green Bay Packers have apparently wasted no time in deciding on head coach Matt LaFleur’s status following the team’s Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears Saturday night.
After blowing a 21-3 halftime lead and falling 31-27 to Chicago, there was speculation that the Packers would move on from LaFleur. However, NFL insiders reported Monday morning that the team is planning on working out a new contract with the 46-year-old coach.
Packers, LaFleur to meet soon
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that Green Bay is expected to try to work out a new deal with LaFleur, who has one year remaining on his current pact. Both sides want “clarity” moving forward, per Schefter.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero confirmed the news, which his colleague Ian Rapoport had hinted at over the weekend. While there is a chance things could change after meeting with LaFleur, right now it appears the Packers are intent on bringing him back for 2026–and beyond.
“Other teams with vacancies are watching closely; LaFleur would immediately be a top candidate if he becomes available,” Pelissero wrote.
Packers trying to get over the hump
In seven seasons with the Packers, LaFleur has gone 76-40-1 in the regular season with six playoff appearances and three NFC North titles. However, he’s just 3-6 in the postseason and has produced back-to-back first round exits.
Throw in the fact the Packers were 9-3-1 and then didn’t win again after losing star pass rusher Micah Parsons to a torn ACL, plus Saturday’s collapse in Chicago, and there have been questions about LaFleur’s future.
“I don’t think those are questions for me,” LaFleur said Sunday. “Like I said, I think my sole focus is just trying to find solutions to some of our issues and why things went awry yesterday. And you know, it’s disappointing. I’m as disappointed, obviously, as, as all you guys, as our fans, as everybody in our organization, because we had plenty of opportunities to slam the door shut, and we didn’t get it done.”
Assuming LaFleur is back as expected, his staff will likely look different next season, especially if defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is picked to be a head coach during this hiring cycle.
