The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made the controversial decision to approve Opill (norgestrel) as an over-the-counter daily oral contraceptive in July 2023. This marked the first time a birth control pill was available without a prescription in the U.S. Opill became accessible at retail pharmacies and online stores in March 2024. However, many experts argue that this move by the FDA was irresponsible and goes against their core mission of safeguarding public health.

The manufacturer of Opill, Perrigo, promotes the pill as a convenient option for individuals without health insurance or easy access to medical services. Their website markets Opill as a hassle-free alternative with no prescription required. Despite these claims, Opill contains norgestrel, a type of progestin that poses significant health risks.

Progestin is the active ingredient in Opill, which is classified as a progestin-only contraceptive pill, often known as a “mini-pill.” Unlike combination oral contraceptives that contain both estrogen and progestin, Opill solely contains progestin. This single-hormone formulation is believed to have fewer side effects, but it is far from being a safe option due to the potential risks associated with progestin.

The history of progestin dates back to the mid-20th century when chemists started developing synthetic versions of progesterone extracted from wild Mexican yams. Synthetic progestins like norethindrone and norethynodrel were created as derivatives of testosterone and were initially approved for gynecological disorders caused by excess estrogen. These synthetic progestins lack the health benefits of natural progesterone and carry a range of health risks.

Recent studies have shown that progestin-containing contraceptives may increase the risk of breast cancer. Users of hormonal contraceptives, including progestin-only pills, have been found to have an elevated risk of developing breast cancer. The Women’s Health Initiative study demonstrated that women taking synthetic progestins experienced higher rates of various adverse health effects.

In an interview with Susan Wadia-Ells, Ph.D., author of “Busting Breast Cancer: Five Simple Steps to Keep Breast Cancer Out of Your Body,” she discussed a significant study from 2010 linking progestin use to increased breast cancer risk. The study revealed how progestin could activate proteins that suffocate mitochondria in breast cells, potentially initiating cancer development.

On the other hand, natural progesterone offers numerous health benefits by acting as an antagonist to estrogen and cortisol. Progesterone plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, making it a vital hormone for both men and women. While synthetic progestins like those found in Opill should be avoided, natural progesterone can be beneficial when administered correctly.

The ideal method for using progesterone involves transmucosal application, where the hormone is absorbed through the gums. This method allows progesterone to act as a natural estrogen antagonist and offers the most significant health benefits. Dr. Ray Peat’s research has extensively documented the importance of countering excess estrogen with transmucosal progesterone supplementation.

When using progesterone transmucosally, it’s vital to choose a high-quality, natural vitamin E as the solvent for optimal absorption. Progesterone powder can be purchased online from reputable suppliers. Proper dosing and timing are essential for obtaining the best results while minimizing adverse effects.

In conclusion, the approval of Opill by the FDA highlights the importance of understanding the risks associated with synthetic progestins and the benefits of natural progesterone. By choosing natural alternatives and using them correctly, individuals can mitigate health risks and promote overall well-being. Consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended before starting any progesterone therapy to ensure safety and effectiveness.

## FAQs

**1. Are there any side effects of using natural progesterone?**
Natural progesterone is generally well-tolerated when used in appropriate doses and following proper administration guidelines. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as drowsiness or changes in menstrual cycle patterns. It’s essential to consult a healthcare provider before starting progesterone therapy.

**2. Can natural progesterone be used as a treatment for hormone-related conditions?**
Natural progesterone can be beneficial for managing certain hormone-related conditions, such as estrogen dominance, irregular menstrual cycles, and menopausal symptoms. It is essential to work with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate dosage and timing for optimal results.

**3. Is the use of transmucosal progesterone legal and safe?**
Transmucosal application of progesterone is a safe and effective method for hormone supplementation. While some regulatory bodies may restrict certain forms of administration, transmucosal progesterone is widely used and recommended by healthcare professionals for its superior absorption and bioavailability.
