EXCLUSIVE: Nana Mensah has been promoted to series regular for Season 4 of Netflix‘s hit political drama The Diplomat.

Mensah has been with the show since Season 1 in the recurring role of Billie Appiah, the tenacious and extremely loyal White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah, who has become much more involved in the story over the course of three seasons as the President of the United States has evolved from an opaque character to a key figure in U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler’s (Keri Russell) investigation into the bombing of a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf. In Season 3, Billie must ingratiate herself with newly minted POTUS Grace Penn (Allison Janney)— the very woman she’d been back channeling to oust as VP.

Mensah is a Ghanaian-American writer, director, actor and producer. She wrote, directed, and stars in the feature Queen of Glory, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, where it won Best New Narrative Director. The film was also nominated for two Indie Spirit Awards for Best First Feature. On TV, Mensah starred in Presumed Innocent for Apple alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. She also recently played the series regular role of Yaz in Netflix’s The Chair opposite Sandra Oh.

In addition to writing and acting, Mensah has also performed on Broadway in “Jaja’s African Braiding” and “Fear of 13” at the Donmar Warehouse opposite Adrien Brody.
