Trump Says Iran Will Pay for Ship Damages in Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump warned Iran on Thursday that it will be held responsible for the financial cost of ships it damages in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also warned the Houthis that they face “major military punishment” over their Saudi naval blockade.

‘May Be Very Substantial’: “[A]ny and all damages done to ships, cargo, or anything related thereto, will be paid for by Iranian money that the United States has in its possession, and controls. These damages may be very substantial but, nevertheless, this is the fair and equitable thing to do,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. If the Houthis attack shipping in the Red Sea, “the US will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a surrogate and/or proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves, who I am very disappointed with in that they have, until now, acted very professionally and smart,” he wrote in a second post. New Slate of US Tariffs Replace Expiring Duties

US trade representative Jamieson Greer announced on Thursday that a slew of new tariffs on dozens of economies will replace President Donald Trump’s expiring 10% global tariffs. These are being imposed “in response to the failure of 60 economies to ban imports produced with forced labor,” explained a statement from Greer’s office.

‘Tackling Slavery at its Source’: “This action applies to the top 60 US trade partners covering 99.4% of US imports,” the fact sheet read. “President Trump is tackling modern-day slavery at its source by requiring our trading partners to enact and enforce import bans to ensure products made by workers under such horrifying conditions are no longer traded in global commerce.” Related: Trump’s Plan B on tariffs, swing at SCOTUS…

Secret Service Agent on JD Vance’s Detail Probed for Leaking

The Secret Service confirmed on Thursday that an agent on Vice President JD Vance’s detail “is under investigation for leaking sensitive information,” CBS News reports.

‘Potential Criminal Inquiry’: “Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications, did not name the member of the detail or reveal the specifics of the investigation, but said the administrative probe could become a criminal inquiry,” the network relates. “A member of the Vice Presidential Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation, and potential criminal inquiry, involving allegations of compromising operational and information security,” Guglielmi said in a statement. “While we will not comment on the specifics of this matter, one principle is unequivocal: any conduct that potentially threatens the safety of a protectee will not be tolerated.” Related: Besieged Secret Service hit with stunning whistleblower claim…

Judges Allow Tennessee to Use New Map Dividing Black District

A panel of three federal judges on Thursday “allowed Tennessee to use a new congressional map that divides a majority-Black district in Memphis, rejecting an effort to block the plan ahead of the state’s primary elections in August,” The Hill reports.

Rejected: “Opponents argued Republican lawmakers were motivated at least in part by racial discrimination when they dismantled the Memphis-area district, which they argue violated the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution,” the news site details. “The panel of federal judges, which consisted of two Trump appointees and one Obama appointee, wrote in their opinion that plaintiffs likely would not win their lawsuit because they ‘lack any direct evidence of racial motivation.’” Related: What’s the meaning of redistricting?

Former Obama Aide Charged With Stealing Debit Card to Buy Kratom

A former Barack Obama press aide “is facing a felony charge, accused of stealing a co-worker’s debit card to purchase kratom, a mood-altering substance, from a Minneapolis smoke shop,” Fox News reports.

Minnesota Thievery: “Adam Fetcher served as the chief communications officer for the City of Minneapolis until he was fired from his role in early July during a police investigation after reports he had stolen cash and bank cards from three fellow municipal employees and blown through hundreds of dollars in smoke shops,” the network writes. “Before he worked for Frey, Fetcher held a number of high-level communications posts in the Obama administration and on the former president’s campaign. He served as the assistant press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security for about eight months in 2011.” Related: Sheriff says Somali youth gangs are running wild in Minneapolis…
