The US and Iran are closing in on a deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, senior US officials said Sunday, even as President Donald Trump insisted he would not “rush” into an agreement.

Optimism over a deal pushed global stocks towards a record high as crude oil fell. Secretary of State Marco Rubio struck a cautiously upbeat tone, saying the US was going to give diplomacy every chance. “We thought we might have some news last night,” he told reporters in New Delhi. “Maybe today.”

Meanwhile the European Central Bank is set to lift its inflation outlook when policymakers meet next month, according to President Christine Lagarde.
