Hexagon, Boeing, and leading aero-engine companies have joined forces to create the Rotor Dynamics Consortium (RDC) to drive the development of advanced modeling and simulation technologies. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the industry by utilizing simulation to enhance safety and overcome engineering challenges.
The RDC will focus on defining, driving, and standardizing rotordynamics modeling and simulation requirements to enable airframers and aerospace engine manufacturers to overcome the challenges associated with developing new, more sustainable, and efficient propulsion systems. By leveraging finite element methods and next-generation multiphysics simulations, the consortium will address critical issues related to engine rotordynamics and the impact on airframe safety under various flight conditions.
As the field of rotordynamics evolves, the adoption of the open rotor concept to achieve improved fuel efficiencies poses unique challenges for aerospace engine manufacturers. These challenges include vibration control, bearing design, and system stability, especially in scenarios like post fan bladeout (FBO) windmilling. The RDC’s inaugural meeting on June 28th, 2024, will introduce new simulation solutions designed to support industry compliance and establish an industry standard.
Subham Sett, Head of Multiphysics Simulation at Hexagon, emphasized the importance of innovative simulation technologies in facilitating rapid innovation and ensuring engineering decisions are accurate. The RDC’s launch signifies a significant milestone in advancing simulation methodologies for developing more efficient propulsion systems.
The RDC Consortium will address topics such as Rotordynamics Methods, Modeling, and Non-linear Rotordynamics during the ASME Turbo Expo 2024 in London. The consortium kickoff meeting on June 28th, 2024, will bring together industry experts, fostering collaboration and driving research and development. Participating companies include The Boeing Company, General Electric, Safran Aircraft Engines, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, Honeywell, MTU Aero, and ITP Aero.
