Now, a digital artist can sell works globally without entering a physical gallery. Moreover, they can sell directly to their collector. Without intermediaries, uncensored, freely.
This situation is revolutionary, especially for young and independent artists. Digital art communities, growing on social media, are creating their own markets. The aesthetic perception is changing. The definition of “reality” is blurring. But within this blur, a new creativity is also emerging.
Of course, there’s not just a romantic side to it. Speculation is rampant in the NFT market too. Some works are seen solely as investment vehicles. They are bought, sold, and appreciate in value. This admittedly somewhat overshadows the emotional aspect of art. But this has always been the case. Remember, classical artworks were once created on commission. So, art’s connection to the market has never been severed. NFTs are simply digitizing this relationship.
For me, the most fascinating aspect is this: Digital art offers an unlimited space for expression. You’re not bound by gravity, paint, canvas, or physical space. Anything you imagine can turn into a file. And thanks to NFTs, this file gains a tangible value. This is a great freedom for the creative individual.
But with this freedom comes great responsibility. In the digital realm, “everyone can be an artist”; yes. But art still requires a language, an attitude, courage. NFTs might be the new letters of this language, but we will still write the content.
Art is changing because times are changing. NFTs are perhaps the galleries of our era. And we should explore those galleries not by clicking, but by understanding.
