Chinese car manufacturer BYD carried out a remarkably striking test to demonstrate how robust its luxury SUV model, the Yangwang U8L, really is. To prove that the vehicle could withstand even the harshest conditions, the company dropped a 2-ton tree on the car exactly three times.

In three different drops, the maximum impact energy the vehicle was subjected to reached 50.4 kJ. Even though the palm tree was dropped repeatedly, the Yangwang U8L’s body structure remained intact, its doors continued to open without issues, and most importantly, the vehicle’s pillars did not bend. After all these tough trials, the luxury SUV was able to continue on its way without any problems.

The Yangwang U8L is a model built on BYD’s EREV hybrid platform. While the vehicle offers a 200 km range on battery power alone, the 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine acts as a generator, increasing the total range to 1,160 km according to CLTC measurements. Additionally, the model possesses imposing dimensions with a length of 5,400 mm, a width of 2,049 mm, and a height of 1,921 mm.

The Yangwang U8L draws attention not only for its durability but also for its extraordinary capabilities. The vehicle can stay afloat on water for 30 minutes, spin in place (tank turn), and even move sideways (crab walk). The starting price of this ultra-luxury SUV model by BYD is around $180,000.
