BMW’s new X5 will arrive with a litany of powertrains. A gasoline option will be bolstered by diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and hydrogen choices. At the launch of the SUV, it appeared that the V8 had gone away, with gas powertrains seemingly limited to BMW’s ubiquitous inline-six engine options. However, it appears that the V8-powered X5 will indeed live on, even if BMW’s customers will have to wait a bit for it.
BMW will limit the V8 to those buyers most likely to care (enthusiasts) by offering it solely in a performance-focused variant. Though BMW’s statements to the media did not specifically name the trim level that would hold the powertrain, it’s likely the brand will continue to use its current nomenclature. The upcoming V8 model should be called the X5 M60. BMW should drop the “i” from the end of the name, as it has done with more of its new models. It appears that the letter will be reserved as a prefix for BMW’s electric models, like the i3. The model also won’t earn a full-fledged M badge, though an X5 M is certainly on the way.

BMW is looking to roll out the new V8 X5 sometime in 2027. The M Performance model should be largely free of hybrid assistance, though a mild-hybrid setup, where additional power is usually brought from an electric motor in the gearbox, is possible. The previous X5 M60 did so, after all. It’s likely BMW will simply reuse the 4.4-liter V8 from the outgoing model. At the close of the previous X5 generation, that powertrain developed 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, fed to all four wheels via BMW’s excellent xDrive all-wheel drive system.. BMW buyers should be expecting similar numbers, if not more.
