In a thought-provoking guest post by John deVadoss, a co-founder at the InterWork Alliance, we are invited to delve into the intricacies of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the AI Singularity theory, and the existential threats they pose to humanity. However, deVadoss steers the discussion towards a more immediate and hardly debated danger: the monopoly of centralized AI, or “Big AI,” and its far-reaching implications for sovereignty, individual agency, and the social contract.

The discourse around AGI and the so-called AI Singularity often captures the imagination with its dystopian visions of humanity overtaken by superintelligent machines. While these narratives are gripping and certainly warrant consideration, they tend to overshadow a pressing concern that lurks within our current trajectory with AI — the monopolistic control by Big AI entities. This control poses a significant threat not to the far-off future, but to our present social structures, autonomy, and the very notion of state sovereignty.

The Erosion of Sovereignty

The impending risk of AI consolidation into a few tech giants represents the dawn of the dissolution of national sovereignty. Similar to how cloud platforms revolutionized the tech infrastructure with their omnipresent yet monopolistic tendencies, AI, if left to follow this path, could mark the end of national autonomy.

Cloud platforms, despite their dominance, were static and replaceable components within the tech ecosystem. The primary concern associated with them was the risk of being de-platformed, which, while significant, was usually mitigable through alternative services — albeit at a cost.

Contrastingly, Big AI’s dominance introduces an unparalleled relinquishment of control not just over digital infrastructure but over cultural, linguistic, and societal norms. Over time, this could lead to nations losing their grip over crucial economic, political, and military decision-making processes — essentially, their sovereignty.

It is becoming increasingly clear that for a nation to maintain its integrity and autonomy in the digital age, it must foster and govern its own ‘sovereign AI’. Localized development and control of AI technologies are paramount to preserving national interests on the global stage.

Fracturing the Social Contract

Big AI, with its gargantuan data appetites, operates under the pretense that all content on the internet is fair game for their model training, irrespective of the original creators’ rights or compensations. Meanwhile, the displacement of jobs by AI advancements is justified by these entities with a dismissive air, oversimplifying the complex socio-economic web that sustains diverse livelihoods.

Proposals such as Universal Basic Income (UBI) are bandied about as panaceas to the displacement caused by AI, yet this view is myopic. The experience of economic assistance during recent global lockdowns, and its unintended consequences on traditional and crypto markets, serves as a cautionary tale of the complexities involved in such solutions.

The challenge lies in mitigating the impact of AI on the knowledge and service sectors, which are the heartbeat of modern economies. The potential division between those who leverage AI to augment their capabilities and those who are sidelined by it underscores the need for a nuanced approach beyond simplistic solutions like UBI.

Diminishing Human Agency

The concept of agency, deeply rooted in the philosophical tradition of Hegel, denotes the collective dynamism and the power of individual choices and influences. Agency is crucial for personal development, societal health, and overall well-being.

Yet, as Big AI permeates every facet of human life, from education and work to personal relationships and self-exploration, we witness a gradual attrition of human agency. The allure of convenience offered by AI undermines the development of resilience, purpose, and self-esteem, especially among the youth.

Historically, technological advancements have aimed to augment human agency. In stark contrast, Big AI threatens to supplant it, positioning technology as a substitute rather than a tool for enhancement.

Envisioning the Future

The trajectory towards a digital Leviathan challenges us to reassess the principles of the social contract, the sanctity of human agency, and the relevance of local sovereignty in the face of burgeoning centralized AI powers. The question looms: will these foundational elements withstand the tide of Big AI, or will they be relics of a bygone era?

The solution lies in a collective resolve to resist the allure of convenient, centralized AI oligarchies and to champion the development and governance of AI technologies that empower rather than undermine human society. The future will be shaped by our willingness to ensure that our tools remain exactly that — tools that serve us, rather than define us.

This insightful examination into the socio-economic challenges posed by Big AI underscores the pressing need for a thoughtful dialogue and assertive actions to safeguard our autonomy, societal structures, and global integrity. As we stand at this critical juncture, let us choose a path that embraces technology for the empowerment it can offer, not the control it could impose.

Conclusion

In the digital age, where the boundaries of reality and virtuality blur, we find ourselves at a crossroads. Big AI, with its promises of efficiency and convenience, beckons us into a future where human effort is seemingly obsolete. Yet, as John deVadoss aptly points out, this path leads to a diminution of our very essence — sovereignty, agency, and the social contract that binds us. The call to action is clear: we must chart a course that leverages AI as a tool for our empowerment, not as a yoke around our necks. In this challenge lies an opportunity for creativity, for resilience, and for a renewed commitment to the values that define us as a society. As we navigate this uncharted territory, let us be guided by the spirit of innovation and a steadfast dedication to the common good, ensuring that as we cross this socio-economic Rubicon, we emerge stronger and more united in our diversity and our humanity.
