Screen legend Clint Eastwood is best known for his roles in iconic western movies and cop dramas, although he also took a turn at playing an aging action hero in some later films.

Clint Eastwood Said He ‘Loved the ‘Unforgiven’ Script
According to CBS, Eastwood enjoyed the complexity of the script.
“I loved the Unforgiven” script. You had to get a ways into it before you knew who was the protagonist and who was the antagonist. Even the villains, with the exceptions of the renegade cowboys, had good points to their character, and had dreams,” he said, according to CBS.
According to Esquire, in the movie, Eastwood explores the costs of violence. He received criticism over the years for the violent edge to some of his movies, like the cop drama Dirty Harry, but Unforgiven took a different look at it all; it was “about a retired Wyoming gunslinger who’s had a change of heart about killing in his twilight years,” Esquire noted.
This caused some critics to see the film thematically as sending a message about Eastwood’s supposed change of heart over his own movies’ themes. But the screen he cut makes that analysis more complicated.
The movie won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, and Esquire believes it’s deserved, writing, “This is one of those rare movies where everything is just perfect, especially the heavyweight cast, which includes Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, and Richard Harris.”
Not Everyone Ranks ‘Unforgiven’ as Clint Eastwood’s Best Film
That being said, everyone doesn’t agree that Unforgiven is Eastwood’s best film.
Rotten Tomatoes lists The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as Eastwood’s best film, A Fistful of Dollars as second best, and Unforgiven as number three. “As both director and star, Clint Eastwood strips away decades of Hollywood varnish applied to the Wild West, and emerges with a series of harshly eloquent statements about the nature of violence,” Rotten Tomatoes says of Unforgiven.
However, Gold Derby also givesUnforgiven its top spot, writing, “The film took a more serious look at the violence often portrayed in westerns and Eastwood wanted to show the human toll such violence takes on people.”
Clint Eastwood Cut a Final Scene, Helping Make the Movie a Classic

According to Rober Ebert.com, Eastwood cut a final scene from the movie, and, in doing so, helped Unforgiven become a classic. The screenplay ended with Eastwood’s character William Munny “returning to his Kansas homestead where he has a tender reunion with his children, calling his daughter ‘a lady’ and gently praising his son for taking care of the farm.”
He then lies to his son that he didn’t kill anyone. Robert Ebert.com says this scene was modeled on the ending of the Godfather.
However, Eastwood cut the scene, claiming it was for “pacing reasons,” Roger Ebert.com reports. The movie’s script was inspired in part by John Wayne’s final movie, The Shootist, in which Wayne plays a gunslinger who is dying of cancer (which Wayne was really battling at the time.) Instead, Unforgiven ends with Eastwood’s character killing people in a shootout and then riding out of town to relocate with his family. This ending complicates the understanding of Eastwood’s character and the themes he’s trying to advance with the film.
