In July, Seeking Alpha invited analysts to participate in a Best Contrarian Idea competition. We received 66 submissions. Here’s a look at all of the winners as determined by the judging editors:

1) Rasmus Tolppanen – Albemarle: Now It’s Really Time To Look At Lithium (Rating Upgrade) – The analyst says lithium has likely bottomed after a brutal selloff (and the best times to buy commodities are when nobody even thinks of touching them), the supply/demand dynamics are improving, and lithium demand remains a secular trend while Albemarle is financially resilient, has cut costs, and trades near book value, offering a compelling risk/reward.

2) Agar Capital – Argan: The Stock That Could Fuel America’s AI – Argan is poised to benefit from surging U.S. energy demand, with a record backlog and strong margin expansion driven by AI, data centers, and EV growth, there are several opportunities that the market underestimates, and its robust balance sheet and high-quality project pipeline support a Buy rating.

3) ALLKA Research – GE HealthCare Stock: Hidden Winner Of Alzheimer’s Drug Boom – The shares have an attractive risk/reward after the recent completion of a technical correction, the company is one of the leaders in the healthcare sector, net debt is falling (allowing it to begin a more aggressive share buyback program and further increase dividends) and the analyst was more than optimistic about results for 2Q25 and expected that it would beat the consensus estimates, which it did.

We selected the winners based on how compelling the thesis is (50%) and independent insights (50%).

First place receives an award of US $1,500, second place US $1,250, and third place US $1,000.
