Intel has recently expanded its list of supported games for its APO technology, including popular titles like Fortnite and CyberPunk 2077. Additionally, the company has incorporated its latest Arrow Lake desktop CPUs (Core Ultra 200S) into the mix.

APO (Application Performance Optimization) is a feature designed to enhance frame rates in supported games through optimized thread scheduling, particularly benefiting efficiency cores. These efficiency cores are found in Intel’s hybrid CPUs starting from Alder Lake, the 12th-gen family for Team Blue.

Intel has added APO support for Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, and Core Ultra 7 265KF. The Core Ultra 5 245K, another Arrow Lake CPU, offers a limited take on APO due to its fewer than eight performance cores but still provides some benefits. It’s important to note that any CPU must have at least six cores and be a ‘K’ series unlocked chip to utilize APO.

Alongside the CPU support, Intel has also expanded its list of supported games, which now includes Fortnite, CyberPunk 2077, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike 2, among others. The full list of supported games is:

  • Company of Heroes 3
  • Counter-Strike 2
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dota 2
  • Fortnite
  • Naraka: Bladepoint
  • Riftbreaker
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Total War: Pharaoh
  • Total War: Three Kingdoms
  • Total War: Warhammer 3

Analysis: A needed boost in a tough battle against AMD

Adding another dozen high-profile games to the Intel APO lineup is a positive step. With Arrow Lake, Intel seems to be striving to enhance its gaming performance, addressing the disappointment among PC gamers regarding its generational gains.

There have been comparisons highlighting that Core Ultra 200S CPUs are slightly slower in gaming performance compared to AMD’s 7000X3D chips. Moreover, rumors suggest that AMD’s Ryzen 9800X3D could deliver a significant performance boost, posing further challenges for Intel.

These developments come in the midst of Intel facing difficulties with the instability of its 13th-gen and 14th-gen processors, although Arrow Lake CPUs have been exempt from these issues.
