BEIRUT —

Amidst the escalating tensions in the Middle East, Israel launched a devastating attack on part of the Lebanese capital, resulting in the death of at least 12 people and injuring 66 others, as reported by Lebanese authorities.

This strike followed a series of explosions caused by sabotaged electronic devices that rocked the country, claiming the lives of 30 individuals and causing injuries to thousands, a deliberate act widely attributed to Israel.

Prior to Israel’s attack, Hezbollah retaliated by firing rockets into northern Israel on Thursday night. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, vowed to avenge the bombings that had occurred through various means of communication.

During Friday’s airstrike, Israel targeted a crowded Beirut suburb during rush hour, specifically aiming at several commanders in the Radwan Force, Hezbollah’s special forces, according to Israeli army spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.

The strike also sought out Ibrahim Aqil, identified as a senior military commander closely associated with Nasrallah. Aqil has also been accused by the U.S. of being responsible for the deadly bombings of U.S. Marines in Lebanon during the 1980s.

In the aftermath of the attack in Dahieh, the chaotic scene unfolded as family members rushed to the area, only to be prevented from entering by Hezbollah operatives who cordoned off the damaged buildings. The strike had hit close to Al-Qaim, a significant mosque in the area.

For hours after the incident, emergency vehicles, bulldozers, and rescue teams worked tirelessly in the area to provide aid and support. The Lebanese civil defense reported that at least two apartment buildings had collapsed in the densely populated neighborhood of Dahieh.

Residents were urged to evacuate the area, with families seen carrying their belongings as they gathered near the barricade. An official used a megaphone to encourage the crowds to disperse and allow rescue efforts to proceed, rallying them in defiance against Israel.

The clashes between Israel and Hezbollah reignited in October, with the militant group intensifying cross-border attacks in solidarity with Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza. Recent statements from Israeli military officials indicated a more aggressive stance towards Hezbollah, escalating tensions further.

Despite diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region, the conflict continued to escalate. U.S. officials, who had been unable to broker a cease-fire in Gaza, disavowed any involvement in the recent attacks in Lebanon, reiterating their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to prevent further conflict.

As the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, it is essential for all parties involved to seek peaceful resolutions and avoid actions that could lead to further violence and suffering.
