What’s the Bad News for Denzel Washington’s Hannibal?
Cinematographer Robert Richardson says Hannibal is “effectively dead,” telling Deadline at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival that the project fell through roughly two weeks ago.

Richardson had cleared 10 to 12 weeks for the shoot. His comments to The Playlist are the first crack in the optimism the studio offered back in June.
Why Did Netflix Pause the Hannibal Movie?
Netflix paused pre-production in June 2026 after the budget swelled past $200 million, a figure that would have made Hannibal one of the streamer’s most expensive productions ever, with filming set for Italy this summer.
The timing is the strange part. Fuqua is fresh off Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that made over $980 million on a $155 million budget. Even a director coming off one of the year’s biggest hits wasn’t enough to keep Netflix’s ambitious Hannibal project moving forward.
Why Was Hannibal Such a Big Deal?
This was a rare one. A legendary African general at the center of a global epic, with Denzel in the lead, Fuqua directing their sixth film together, and Gladiator writer John Logan on the script. Big-budget history rarely looks like this.

The two have been building toward something like this since Training Day in 2001, then through the Equalizer run. Hannibal Barca crossed the Alps with war elephants and held southern Italy for 15 years. That’s the movie we’re not getting.
Is Hannibal Officially Dead at Netflix?
Netflix has not officially cancelled the film, so “effectively dead” remains Richardson’s characterization rather than a studio announcement, though no revival plan has been made public.

Another studio could always step in, but a $200 million price tag is a heavy lift for anyone. In the meantime, nobody’s waiting around. Lionsgate is fast-tracking a Michael sequel for Fuqua, and Denzel has Here Comes the Flood with Robert Pattinson coming this fall.
