Despite the gloomy state of the broader crypto market, the NFT sector is still making waves. The latest feat on the digital collectibles front is a historic collaboration between Doodles and the pioneering Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian.

According to a tweet by the fine art platform ElmonX, the collection is scheduled for release exclusively on OpenSea on June 4. It is the first-ever approved by the Mondrian Estate. Over 82 years since Mondrian’s death, his estate has guarded his works and legacy due to the significant impact he has had on culture and the art world as a whole.

Mondrian built his geometric compositions from vertical and horizontal lines, primary colors, and balanced white space. His artwork influenced the logic behind architecture, product design, fashion, and the underlying grid of nearly every digital interface in existence. He has become a major influence on 21st and 21st century fashion, particularly Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic 1965 dress.

The collection released in partnership with Doodles only reimagines Mondrian’s original compositions. The structure of the selected five compositions stays the same, with only the addition of Doodles’ color, character, and playful energy. The collection features seven iconic reimagined compositions across three drops, and two museum-quality physical prints.

According to ElmonX, Drop 1 is tagged the Collector Blind Box, featuring five artworks and 555 editions. Drop 2 is called the Coated Pink and features 150 editions, while Drop 3 is tagged Focused and has 150 editions. The physical prints are to be signed by Doodles founder and CEO, Scott Martin (pseudonymously known as Burnt Toast). Notably, the Coated Pink and Focused editions are redeemable for the physical prints or the VeVe Digital Collectible.

In an X article explaining how Doodles landed the collaboration, OpenSea revealed that ElmonX secured the license from the Mondrian estate a while ago but waited to find the right creative partner for the job.

ElmonX’s co-founder, Jacob Elmon, said: “It had to be someone who understood the work, not just the aesthetic but the structure, the balance, the discipline behind it.” He added that the partnership felt less like brand collaboration between the two entities and more like “a creative conversation that was always meant to happen.”
