China, despite technically lacking access to the latest Nvidia accelerators, is finding innovative ways to overcome this challenge. The Chinese government has enlisted the help of universities to bypass the embargo.

As the generative AI boom intensifies, training machine learning models has become more critical than ever, marking the core of this technological surge. This urgency is precisely why Nvidia’s accelerators have remained at the forefront of competition for years.

According to a report by Reuters, China still has access to Nvidia’s latest accelerators, including the A100 and H100, allowing the country to efficiently train AI projects and remain competitive in the AI race.

China is reportedly achieving this by utilizing cloud services from companies like Amazon and Microsoft, which provide the necessary infrastructure. While the export of technology and software to China is restricted by embargoes, there are no limitations on using cloud infrastructure.

Many Chinese universities are said to obtain these services through Chinese intermediary firms rather than directly from Amazon or Microsoft, using them for specific research projects and machine learning model training. Although companies like Alibaba also offer AI training within the country, Nvidia’s accelerators remain the preferred choice for universities.

This issue has been a topic of discussion in Congress for some time, with certain members advocating for cloud infrastructure services provided to China to be included under blacklist regulations. However, it is uncertain whether any new regulations will be implemented, especially in the run-up to the elections.
