Kevin

The ’80s didn’t just give us the greatest action heroes of all time; it also unleashed a rogues’ gallery of villains so memorable they sometimes threatened to steal the whole damn movie. From Armani-wearing masterminds to chainmail-vest lunatics, these bad guys defined the golden age of action cinema.

There are so many to choose from: Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) from Bloodsport, the Night Slasher (Brian Thompson) from Cobra, Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) from Aliens—the list is endless. Here are a few of my personal favourite ’80s action movie villains.

Commando, Bennett

If Arnold Schwarzenegger’s John Matrix is the ultimate ’80s action hero, Bennett is his gloriously unhinged counterpart. Played with wild-eyed intensity by Vernon Wells (who also played Wez in The Road Warrior), Bennett looks like he wandered in from a completely different movie, sporting a too-tight knitted chainmail vest, a Freddie Mercury moustache, and an attitude that’s equal parts jealous rival and sadistic mercenary.

What makes Bennett so memorable isn’t just his over-the-top look, but the personal vendetta he carries against Matrix, eagerly relishing the chance to finally face him in combat. Plus, he just says some weird ass shit to his adversary, telling Matrix, “I’m not going to shoot you between the eyes! I’m going to shoot you between the balls!” Who says that?

Their climactic showdown in the boiler room is peak ’80s action absurdity, culminating in one of Schwarzenegger’s most legendary one-liners: “Let off some steam, Bennett.”

Robocop, Dick Jones

Dick Jones – RoboCop

While many would go for the gleefully cruel Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith), my pick would be Dick Jones. Played with perfectly smug arrogance by Ronny Cox, Jones is the ultimate corporate villain, an OCP executive willing to sacrifice lives and unleash a malfunctioning robot just to protect his position in the company.

What makes Jones especially memorable is how he operates behind the scenes, treating murder and corruption like routine business decisions. He even takes the time to pre-record a message for Bob Morton, explaining just why he’s sent Boddicker to kill him. This is the type of man who would cancel the cure for cancer just for the tax write-off.

Plus, after witnessing Jones’ slimy shenanigans for most of the film, it’s fitting that the moment he finally gets his comeuppance is one of the best scenes in the entire movie. You’re fired!

The Kurgan, Highlander

Played with gleeful menace by Clancy Brown, the Kurgan is one of the most savage villains of the ’80s. Even Dave Bautista, who is playing the character in the upcoming Highlander reboot, is feeling the pressure of following in the footsteps of Brown’s fantastic performance.

A brutal immortal who revels in violence and chaos, the Kurgan serves as the perfect dark mirror to Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod. Equally terrifying and oddly charismatic, the character dominates every scene he appears in, cementing himself as one of the most unforgettable bad guys of the decade. Although his actions led MacLeod to discover his immortality, the Kurgan made his life one of torment. In one night alone, he murdered Ramírez, MacLeod’s mentor, and raped his wife, Heather.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Toht

Major Arnold Toht isn’t the main villain of Raiders of the Lost Ark. In fact, he has only a small handful of lines in the entire film, yet his deeply unsettling nature makes him one of the most memorable characters in the Indiana Jones franchise.

With a chillingly polite smile and a sadistic giggle, Toht was brought to life by Ronald Lacey, who certainly made the most of the role. The scene in which he unfolds what appears to be a torture device in front of a terrified Marion Ravenwood—only for it to be revealed as a hanger for his coat—is such a wonderfully creepy touch.

And when the Ark is finally opened, Toht can’t help but laugh when it appears to contain nothing but sand. His smug disbelief is quickly replaced with horror when the power of the Ark literally melts his face off. It remains one of the most unforgettable scenes in movie history.

Die Hard, Hans Gruber

You knew this was coming. If the ’80s action boom had a definitive villain, it’s Hans Gruber, played to absolute perfection by Alan Rickman. And can you believe this was his first feature film? Dude was killing it right out of the gate.

Gruber brought a level of sophistication and intelligence rarely seen in action movie antagonists at the time. What makes Gruber so memorable is the way Rickman balances charm, menace, and dry humour, creating a villain who feels every bit as compelling as Bruce Willis’s John McClane.

Nearly four decades later, Hans Gruber remains the gold standard for action movie bad guys.

The ’80s might have been the greatest decade for action heroes, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun without the villains who pushed them to the limit. Now it’s your turn: who are your favourite ’80s action movie villains?
