We are learning more after the first statewide debate for California governor was held in San Francisco on Tuesday. Candidates sounded off on a multitude of issues facing Californians, including immigration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). LiveNOW’s Andy Mac is speaking with KTVU’s Greg Lee, who had the opportunity to host yesterday’s debate, as the election to replace Gavin Newsom draws closer.
The participants in the debate included Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles mayor; Matt Mahan, San Jose mayor; Betty Yee, former California state controller; Xavier Becerra, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and Attorney General of California; Steve Hilton, political commentator and political adviser; Tom Steyer, entrepreneur; and Tony Thurmond, California’s state superintendent of public instruction.
Homelessness was also a focal point during the debate, following a 2024 state audit that found California spent $24 billion addressing homelessness without adequately tracking outcomes. Several notable candidates did not participate. Organizers said Rep. Eric Swalwell, former Rep. Katie Porter and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco were absent due to scheduling conflicts.
