The San Antonio Spurs were so close, but so far away from winning the 2026 NBA Finals. With double-digit leads in every game of the series, the Spurs looked poised to take the title from the long-suffering Knicks, but they squandered the cushion they had in four of the five games.

Instead, San Antonio is the runner-up. They have a bright future, but there are a few key concerns to address this offseason.

Dylan Harper Must Start Next Season

No amount of superlatives can be considered hyperbolic for Dylan Harper. The rookie guard for the Spurs was a revelation in the NBA Finals. He got better with every game, concluding the series with 25 points in Game 5. He was often the best player on the floor for San Antonio, even over Victor Wembanyama.

Harper must start the season in the starting lineup for 2026-2027. San Antonio would be doing a disservice to its young superstar guard if it continues to hold him back.

Find an Athletic Forward

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – APRIL 25: Aaron Gordon #32 of the Denver Nuggets looks on against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second quarter of Game Four of the First Round of the 2026 NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Target Center on April 25, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Spurs need a better frontcourt. Wemby is the only person in the starting lineup taller than 6’5”. San Antonio needs someone who can help the team utilize smaller lineups when Wemby goes to the bench while maintaining adequate skill on the court. Aaron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets may be someone to kick the tires on if the Nuggets look to explore trades for their oft-injured athletic forward.

Be Patient and Learn from Mistakes

Sometimes the only thing to do is be patient and grow. The Spurs made a lot of self-inflicted mistakes in the NBA Finals. They can improve internally by not repeating the same errors. Play with the same force you do in the first half of games. Use players like Devin Vassell to shoot more three-pointers. Work on your late-game execution. These are all evolutions of the team that can happen without a trade.
