On March 4, 2018, Guillermo del Toro’s critically acclaimed love story, The Shape of Water, dominated the Oscars and took home the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.

The film was nominated in a further eight categories, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.

‘The Shape of Water’ Overcame Strong Competition at The 2018 Oscars

Although The Shape of Water ultimately came out on top—winning four awards in total—the film faced some serious competition in one of the strongest Best Picture lineups in recent memory.

The roster including enduring hits like Get Out, Lady Bird, Dunkirk, Phantom Thread, and Call Me By Your Name. These are all films that have continued to build a strong legacy in the near-decade that followed, proving just how memorable this lineup was.

Ultimately, The Shape of Water came out on top for several reasons. Primarily, the sheer amount of nominations that it received was impossible to overlook. It led the field with thirteen nominations; Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk came second with eight.

Additionally, Guillermo del Toro had been a widely respected figure in the industry for several years by this point, and it felt like a suitable time to finally recognize him for his contributions to Hollywood. The Shape of Water was one of his most charming and accessible films, so the stars truly aligned for him in 2018.

Del Toro also faced an incredibly competitive Best Director lineup, going against titans of the industry such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Greta Gerwig, and Christopher Nolan.

Del Toro gave an extremely powerful and moving acceptance speech upon winning his first award, saying: “I think that the greatest thing our art does and our industry does is to erase the lines in the sand. We should continue doing that when the world tells us to make them deeper.”

The Oscars were the final stop in a very strong awards season for The Shape of Water, as the film also picked up the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Best Director at the Golden Globes, Best Picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and leading the nomination tally at the BAFTA Film Awards.
