NATO Member Turkey to Participate in Genocide Case Against Israel

The Turkish foreign minister has emphasized that the Middle East can no longer tolerate the provocations of the Jewish state.

Turkey plans to formally join a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, as announced by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during a press conference in Cairo.

The ICJ case was initiated by South Africa in December, accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Since then, more than a dozen countries have expressed their intention to participate in the case. While the Hague court has not yet issued a final ruling, it has instructed Israel to refrain from any actions that could violate the UN Genocide Convention.

Fidan emphasized that Israel’s “provocations” in the Middle East, including attacks on Lebanon and Iran, are no longer tolerable. He accused the Jewish state of promoting violence and expansionism, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aims to destabilize the entire region.

The minister condemned the “treacherous” assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. Haniyeh had been serving as the chief negotiator for the Palestinian armed group in indirect ceasefire talks with Israel. Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of being behind the attack, although Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.

Fidan also criticized Israel’s “unconditional supporters” for undermining the international order. He pointed out that those who have condemned Russia’s offensive in Ukraine have turned a blind eye to Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territories.

“The West has lost all moral authority in this region due to the Israel issue,” Fidan asserted. He criticized the West’s constant lecturing of Muslim countries on democracy and human rights, stating that it has gone too far.

He called on Israel’s “owners” to control the country, warning that if the massacre in Gaza is not halted, the region and the world will face severe consequences.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza was launched after the October 7, 2023, incursion into southern Israel by Hamas militants, resulting in the death of 1,200 people and the abduction of 250 hostages. Gaza health officials reported that around 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s subsequent response.
