Daniel Rothenberg is the co-director of the Future Security Initiative, a professor of practice in the School of Politics and Global Studies, and a senior fellow at New America. He joins LiveNOW’s Andy Mac to talk about the developing situation in Iran as President Trump continues to issue warnings to Tehran. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to rise as Trump builds a large military presence in the Middle East. Both sides have signaled they are prepared for war if the talks on Tehran’s nuclear program fail.
The new pressure from Trump to continue nuclear peace talks comes as the U.S. military has amassed what has been described as an “armada” in Iran’s backyard. Reports indicate that in the Eastern Mediterranean, destroyers USS Bulkeley and USS Roosevelt could potentially provide additional strike capability and missile defense coverage, while assisting Israel in defending against any Iranian counterattacks. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, the U.S. and others suspect it is aimed at eventually developing weapons. Iran says it hasn’t been enriching uranium since U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June.
