Tottenham Hotspur have suspended Yves Bissouma after a video emerged showing the midfielder inhaling laughing gas.
The video emerged following Tottenham’s pre-season defeat to Bayern Munich in north London – a game in which the midfielder played 46 minutes – and showed the Mali international inhaling nitrous oxide from a balloon. Recreational use of the gas was deemed a criminal offence in 2023.
Confirming the decision to suspend Bissouma for Monday’s Premier League opener against Leicester City, manager Ange Postecoglou said: “Been in the game for a long time, when a situation like this arises, I’ve tried to look at them in a couple of ways. First there’s a person and it’s Biss and he’s made a poor decision.
“There are still sanctions involved, and some of those are educational. He is a footballer with responsibilities.
“He won’t be available on Monday. We’ve suspended him from Monday’s game. He needs to build that trust back with both me and the group. The door is open for him and we can help him realise the decisions he makes impact the group.”
Bissouma has also apologised, adding: “I want to apologise for these videos. This was a severe lack of judgment.
“I understand how serious this is and the health risks involved, and I also take my responsibility as a footballer and role model very seriously.”
In Bissouma’s absence, Rodrigo Bentancur and new signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall will all be hoping to get the nod to play alongside Pape Matar Sarr in Spurs’ midfield on Monday evening.

Manager Ange Postecoglou’s response to the situation reflects the challenges faced by football clubs when dealing with off-field incidents involving players. While there is an acknowledgment of Bissouma’s mistake, there is also a call for education and rehabilitation rather than condemnation. The focus seems to be on helping the player learn from his error and regain the trust of the team.
Bissouma’s apology suggests a sense of regret and awareness of the seriousness of his actions. As a public figure and role model, he recognizes the responsibility that comes with his position as a professional footballer. It highlights the need for mentoring, guidance, and support systems within football clubs to help players navigate the challenges of fame and fortune.
