With CinemaCon right around the corner, this week’s box office is a mixed bag of impressive holds for movies like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Project Hail Mary, and The Drama, while titles like You, Me, & Tuscany and Faces of Death disappointed with less-than-stellar debuts. Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still at the top of its game, with $153M worldwide, bringing its global cume to $629M. The sugar-rush-like sequel is the second-highest-grossing movie so far in 2026 after China’s Pegasus 3 ($645M) and shows no signs of slowing down. Galaxy‘s second weekend totaled in at $69M stateside, bringing its domestic total to $308.1M.
All hail Project Hail Mary
While Mario Galaxy continues to give Nintendo reasons to say “Wahoo” about teaming with Illumination Entertainment for its animated output, Project Hail Mary continues to shine like a sun (one that’s not getting eaten by black dots) with another $24.5M, bringing its overall domestic total to $256.6M. Analysts expected Project Hail Mary to do well, but its success is overwhelming considering the film’s lengthy runtime and high-concept sci-fi roots. Is it the Ryan Gosling factor? That could be part of it. But the film’s success is likely due to its stellar quality, compelling story, and welcome approach to practical effects.
Audiences aren’t feeling the love for You, Me, & Tuscany
Elsewhere at the box office, Universal’s new rom-com, You, Me & Tuscany, starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, earned the fourth-place spot with an $8M debut. The film’s opening total is disappointing, as analysts expected it to do better. Still, the feel-good film has an A- CinemaScore, so it could be a slow burn toward success.
The Drama continues to surprise us
The biggest surprise from this past week is Kristoffer Borgli’s The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The dark romantic comedy earned $8.7M in its second week, bringing its overall domestic total to $30.8M. People assumed The Drama would fizzle out after its first week, given the twist and its Easter weekend launch, but word of mouth is strong, giving the film some welcome staying power.
Faces of Death bombs
Unfortunately, Daniel Goldhaber’s remake of Faces of Death, starring Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferreira, is a disaster, grossing only $1.7M in its 3-day opening. The horror film opened in 1.678 theaters to a C CinemaScore, not giving horror fans the push they needed to check it out. Despite being produced by Legendary (with Shudder as a co-distributor), Faces of Death doesn’t appear to have the juice horror fans need after spending their hard-earned cash on tickets to Scream 7 just a few weeks ago.
Exit 8 is big in Japan
On the other side of the horror spectrum, Genki Kawamura’s Exit 8, based on the walking simulator video game from Kotake Create, is a massive hit in Japan, grossing over ¥5.08 billion (approx. $32.5 million–$35 million). However, it’s not resonating with stateside audiences after earning only $1.4M during its opening weekend. If you’re interested in playing the game, it’s only a few bucks on the PlayStation Store right now. I picked it up last night and plan to check it out later this evening.
Next weekend brings three exciting releases
There are some week-to-week declines, but as far as sleepy weekends go, movies like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Project Hail Mary, and The Drama are a gift to theater owners and moviegoers alike. Next weekend sees some exciting releases in cinemas, including Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (with great early buzz), A24’s Mother Mary, and Bob Odenkirk’s latest action romp Normal. All three films should do well, with Mother Mary being my most anticipated release.
