The uncertainty surrounding President Trump’s tariff policies remains a key economic concern, especially with potential ripple effects as the administration prepares new reciprocal tariffs against countries with taxes on American imports.
Brown University Professor of Political Science Wendy Schiller joins the Morning Brief to explain the economic implications of these tariff strategies on the American consumer.
“I think the American voter doesn’t really think about this right now because it’s not hitting right now. But, we will see that it will hit. We’ve seen this before, and particularly with subsidies in the farm and exports. This really hits farmers,” Schiller says.
Schiller adds that Trump is strategically using tariffs for political and geopolitical goals, such as pushing Europe on NATO contributions (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). “I will say that he is basically exerting and flexing US power. That is what he wants to do domestically and internationally,” Schiller believes.
