Jennifer Okpechi knows that in many traditional circles, the conversation around wealth has a specific, masculine tone. Growing up in a traditional African home as one of several daughters, she observed a world where men were often the primary voices in financial discussions. “My mom taught me about investing,” Jennifer shares. “She was amazing. She didn’t have it all figured out, but she was willing to learn and she was not afraid to seek help.” Her mother’s motivation was rooted in empathy; she saw women in her community trapped in difficult situations simply because they lacked the financial means to leave. “Having all female children herself, she felt obligated to tell us what’s obtainable and what’s out there.”

“Aku na esi obi ike”: The Courage of a Safety Net

For Jennifer, the drive to invest is summed up in a powerful concept from her own language: Aku na esi obi ike.

“What that means is wealth gives you courage and audacity,” she explains. “Knowing that you have a stack of savings somewhere to fall back on, it doesn’t have to be something huge, can literally set you free.”

This freedom isn’t just about luxury; it’s about the “unthinkable” things women can achieve when they aren’t operating from a place of scarcity. To Jennifer, financial security is the bedrock of emotional and physical autonomy. “It gives us choice,” she says. “Choice over our bodies, emotional freedom, and the leverage to thrive. When we have that security as women, we go ahead to do the unthinkable.”

Rewriting the Financial Story

As a project manager and Scrum Master, Jennifer is used to managing complex systems, but she’s quick to debunk the myth that you need a specialised background to enter the market. “You absolutely don’t have to have a finance degree to become an investor,” she insists.

She views investment as a “powerful tool” that women can use to rewrite their financial stories, yet she acknowledges that being a vocal woman in this space comes with its own set of challenges. Like many women sharing their journeys online, she has faced the “snarky comments” from those who claim she doesn’t “look like an investor.”

“Sometimes I second-guess myself and I’m like, ‘Should I just stop? Is this worth it?’” she admits with characteristic honesty. “But for me, oftentimes, it is what pushes me to go and get more knowledge.”

Breaking the Myth of “The Expert”

Jennifer’s mission is to dismantle the idea that investing is a gated community reserved for those with deep pockets or male-coded expertise. The most crucial aspect of wealth building, she argues, isn’t how much you make, but how you manage what you have.

“That’s the common misconception,” she says. “You don’t have to have a lot of money to start building wealth.” By seeing other women act as role models, she believes the “myth” that investing is only for men will finally be laid to rest.

She wants women to talk about investing not just as a hobby, but as a survival strategy and a growth engine. It is the key to leaving jobs that don’t serve them and exiting situations that diminish them.

“I invest loudly because I want every woman out there to know that investing is not as hard as it seems. You can literally start from little and build wealth over time.”
